¡BIENVENIDOS a la clase de Español!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A new school year has started and I’m happy that your child is in my Spanish class!

Learning a second language is challenging and offers many rewards.   This year your child will be listening to stories, songs, movies, and opinions; reading stories, novels, advertisements, and newspaper articles; writing sentences, paragraphs, letters, notes, stories, and short essays; answering lots of questions; and telling stories all in Spanish.  Your child will also be learning about Hispanic culture.

I will be using a variety of activities so that your child can learn to communicate in Spanish.  One of the main methods that I will use in class is Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS).  This is a brain-based method that uses listening, visual presentation, and personalization of a story.  Students see, hear, and help develop a story.  This process involves quite a bit of repetition so that students can internalize vocabulary and structure and thus use the language.

It is important to remember that learning a second language requires practice over time.  Your child will be expected to:

·        Pay attention and focus in class.
·        Come to class prepared (notebook, pen/pencil, dictionary, homework).
·        Do all assignments thoroughly and carefully.
·        Actively study vocabulary for 10 minutes each day.
·        Cooperate and work well with others.

I am looking forward to this school year and working with your child.  Please feel free to contact me at school if you have any questions or want to discuss your child’s progress.  With your support, I am sure your child will have a successful year.
